These Penguin Chicks Are Nailing Their First Swimming Lesson

It’s not even summer yet, but the two newest penguin chicks at the Dallas Zoo have started their swimming lessons.

The African black-footed penguins, Opus and Moshi, tried swimming for the first time in the zoo’s penguin habitat last week.

Opus and Moshi were born three days apart in December to parents Tazo and Tulip. Both chicks weighed less than 3 ounces at birth but have now reached 6 pounds, according to Dallas News.

They’ve only just shed their downy chick feathers, which they showed off in a video earlier this month:

Penguin Chicks are Hungry for Breakfast

Our African penguin siblings Opus (male) and Moshi (female) show off their hungry vocalizations for breakfast! Captured by keeper Debbie Milligan, the chicks are nearly three months old and will soon take their first dip in the pool. Opus and Moshi are the fourth and fifth African penguins to hatch at the Dallas Zoo.

The brother and sister pair follow in the webbed footsteps of their older twin brothers, Mario and Adelaar, who learned how to swim last year. Their older sister, Marina, was the first of the zoo’s five chicks.

She also walks just like the hunched-over witch who gives Snow White the poisoned apple.

African penguins, also known as jackass penguins, mate for life and lay only two eggs at a time. In the wild, they also dig burrows out of guano (read: bird droppings). We’d take the swimming lessons over the poop caves too.

The duo were born days apart in December to parents Tazo and Tulip. The brother and sister recently lost their gray downy feathers and are ready to begin swimming, the zoo said. Opus, born Dec. 21, and Moshi, born Christmas Eve, weighed less than 3 ounces when they hatched and have grown to about 6 pounds each, the zoo said.
