While collecting data for conservation research in Peru, one lucky scientist experienced an amazing interaction with an enormous and beautiful manta ray.
Manta rays are gentle beings, but that doesn't make them dull. As the video below shows, marine biologist Josh Stewart of Manta Trust was attempting to capture a photo ID of the ray and its unique pattern. But when Stewart got up close to the creature to do so, the 15-foot manta ray did a playful somersault around him.
According to WildAid, manta rays are facing serious threats worldwide from directed fisheries and entanglements in nets and lines, and the research done by Josh Stewart and his fellow researchers will be used to discover ways we can reduce manta ray mortality.
Their work and the incredible footage above are two thing that will make you say "Wow!"
