Meet the Ocean's 15 Most Beautiful Fish

The colors alone will take your breath away. Seriously.

"There are plenty of fish in the sea." We've all heard this phrase plenty of times, but did you know there are actually something like 3.5 trillion fish in the world's ocean? Yes, trillion.

Among these fish are species so unique and breathtakingly beautiful to look at that it's hard to believe some of them are real.

With vibrant hues and intricate patterns, the most beautiful fish in the world are pretty hard to choose. According to World Atlas, there are more than 18,000 species of fish in the ocean — many of which are stunning to look at.

So while it's hard to choose the most beautiful fish in the world (and a little subjective, too), here are some of the most talked-about fish when it comes to appearances.

1. Mandarinfish

Have you ever seen a more beautiful combination of orange and blue?

2. Triggerfish

Triggerfish are known for their stripes and their insane jaws (see video above). There are about 40 different species of the fish throughout the world's oceans!

3. Blue Tang

The blue tang may look familiar thanks to Dory from "Finding Nemo," but its famous blue color is even more stunning in real life.

4. Banggai Cardinalfish

The interesting spotting and fin shape of the banggai cardinalfish makes it particularly unique.

5. Sea Goldie

The striking pinks and blue eyes of the sea goldie make for a stunning combination. This fish is also sometimes known as lyretail coralfish.

6. Parrotfish

Parrotfishes' pastel colors make them particularly stunning. These fish also have 90 different species, making for a variety of patterns and colors.

7. Discus

Discus fish are a particularly popular aquarium fish, especially in Asia.

8. French Angelfish

You've probably heard of angelfish before, but the French angelfish is a particularly gorgeous creature. It apparently gets along quite well with turtles, as well.

9. Lionfish

Lionfish, though beautiful, are actually an invasive species in some parts of the world.

10. Dwarf Gourami

Dwarf Gourami, another popular aquarium fish, has sparkly, metallic-looking scales that make it a visually impressive species.

11. Candy Basslet

The candy basslet quite literally looks like a candy with its vibrant orange and pink stripes.

12. Yellow Tang

Yellow tangs are just that — BRIGHT yellow. They have giant eyes and long, pointed beaks that make them even more whimsical-looking.

13. Arabian Angelfish

When it comes to patterns, the Arabian anglelfish may just take the cake.

14. Clarion Angelfish

While the Arabian angelfish may win when it comes to pattern, the clarion angelfish certainly wins in the color category.

15. Yellow Butterflyfish

Not to be confused with a yellow tang, yellow butterfly fish are a little odd-looking — but still so pretty to look at!
