Suit up, because we're taking a dive into cinematic history. From naval expeditions and pirate chases to tragic love stories at sea, these 10 list of adventure films tell the ultimate stories of adventure on the water.
1. Titanic (1997)
Aside from it being the second highest-grossing film ever, this ocean adventure/melt-your-heart love story is definitely one for the history books. Director James Cameron's impeccable attention to detail with the ill-fated ocean liner's set design, special effects and story details makes this gem of sea-bound cinema a crucial viewing experience to have at least once in your life, if not 10. Just try to ignore the fact that Rose totally had room for Jack on that wooden door.
2. Jaws (1975)
Obviously the infamous "fear all sharks" phenomenon has to make the list. Another animal thriller from Steven Spielberg's directorial triumphs, “Jaws" follows three men in search of a killer great white shark. Still, as simple as it sounds, the film never fails to scares the pants off fans. Even the two-note theme song is still used for any and all petrifying, hair-raising and bone-chilling moments.
3. Finding Nemo (2003)
There isn't much that needs to be said as to why this film makes the list, but for you doubters, “Finding Nemo" is easily the best animated, underwater adventure of all time. Embarking on a literal underwater adventure to save his son, Marlin and Dory take us through the depths of the ocean, meeting and swimming from a variety of sea creatures. As we gear up for “Finding Dory," let us not forget where it all started: 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney.
4. Life of Pi (2012)
As this is the most recent film on the list, “Life of Pi" surely has a more fantastical approach, with its incredible use of special effects to capture the unique quality of the open ocean. Still, the story couldn't be more compelling. A teenage boy stranded at sea with a Bengal tiger? That's Hollywood gold.
5. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)
Being one of Disney's first live-action films, “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" set the stage for future sea-themed movies with special effects considered cutting-edge at the time. Plus, young Kirk Douglas singing and playing the guitar? Count us in.
6. The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
"The Poseidon Adventure" is definitely the best of the best when it comes to disaster movies at sea. As you might guess, hell reigns down on an ocean liner on New Year's Eve, flipping it with one giant wave. It's like a less graceful "Titanic," but with Gene Hackman playing the heroic priest.
7. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
As any good pirate would know, the sea defines their line of work, therefore making the original film of the series a perfect fit on the list. Following Captain Jack Sparrow through his drunken battle for treasure, freedom and rum makes for some great ocean-bound battle scenes. Who can turn down a good 'ole sword fight with some mummified pirates?
8. The Perfect Storm (2000)
With the title being what it is, storm movies don't get much better than this. Based on real events, the film follows a fishing boat that loses its entire crew during a killer storm in 1991. The characters lack of hope for living is also crushing, so if you're looking for a feel-good film, we'd steer clear.

9. Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
We're not ashamed to say that this film holds a special place in our hearts. Shying away from the typical musical numbers of an animated Disney film, Atlantis focuses on the visuals, creating a dramatic layout for the mythical underwater city. It also includes one of the best animated action sequences of the time, making it a very dynamic, cinematic experience.
10. The Life Aquatic (2004)
Everyone's favorite funny man, Bill Murray, stars as a famed oceanographer on a mission to exact vengeance on a rare shark in this strange, silly mess of a film. Thought to be one of Wes Anderson's lesser films, “The Life Aquatic" boasts a stellar cast with some incredible adventure scenes.
