The ocean is such an enormous entity, and humankind's relationship with it is so complex, it can be hard to learn what makes it so vital to our planet's survival. But what can make the learning process easier and a lot more fun? Movies, naturally.

Here are 7 ocean movies and series that showcase the beauty of the sea and the creatures that live there, while educating viewers on some of its most important issues.

1. Mission Blue

This incredible Netflix-Original documentary is about "legendary oceanographer, marine biologist, environmentalist and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Sylvia Earle, and her campaign to create a global network of protected marine sanctuaries."

2. Sushi: The Global Catch

Though it's summary describes at a documentary about the history of sushi, this film actually explores the impact of sushi consumption on the ocean and it's potentially devastating effects.

3. A Sea Change

This movie follows one man's journey around the world to learn about ocean acidification and how the changing ocean's could affect mankind. The movie challengers viewers to "Imagine a world without fish."

4. Wildest Islands

A two-season documentary series, Wildest Islands shows the wildlife and human life on islands around the word—and highlights the important relationship between land and sea.

5. Blue Planet

This David Attenborough-narrated BBC series is "the first ever comprehensive series on the natural history of the world's oceans" and has won several awards. Each episode focuses on a different aspect of the ocean, and is both educational and awe-inspiring.

6. Turtle: The Incredible Journey

"A female loggerhead turtle follows the path of her ancestors on one of the most extraordinary journeys in the natural world. From a beach in Florida, she rides the Gulf Stream to the frozen north, swimming around the entire North Atlantic to Africa and then back to the beach where she was born. But her chance of survival is low." This movie shows how turtles must face both natural and manmade obstacles in order to survive.

7. Moving Art: Oceans

The Moving Art series makes nature into art by combining beautiful cinematography and music, so chances are you won't learn much from this 25-minute film. But you will get a chance to enjoy the majesty and beauty of the ocean from the comfort of your living room!
