Why Are Sam Smith's Fans Known As His 'Little Sailors'?

Sam Smith's fan army didn't actually have an official name for themselves until fairly recently. Here's why the singer ended up choosing "Little Sailors."

There are a couple of signs that let you know you've "made it" as a pop star: like having your own fragrance or holding a press conference to tell the media that you are not a role model. Perhaps most telling of all is when your fans have their own name, à la Beyoncé's BeyHive, Justin Bieber's Beliebers, or Sam Smith's Little Sailors.

Sam's fan army didn't actually have an official name for themselves until fairly recently. Back in October 2014, the "Stay With Me" singer admitted during a visit to "On Air With Ryan Seacrest" that he'd yet to come up with a clever moniker for his fandom.

Within a couple of months, however, he'd settled the issue, tweeting that his army of fans would henceforth be known as his "Little Sailors."

The moniker is a reference to "Little Sailor," a song the 22-year-old Brit wrote a couple of years ago when he first started living on his own in London. With its lyrics about holding on and how "it will be alright," the track was a kind of positive self-affirmation during his pre-fame years, Sam told The FADER in May. So no, he's not encouraging his fans to take to the sea.

That just leaves one question unanswered: When are we getting an eau de Sam Smith? The title of his debut album, In The Lonely Hour, would make an excellent fragrance name, I'm just saying.
